They were the scrappy bold American pilots-for-hire who signed on with General Chennault to fly for the Chinese Air Force against the fierce Japanese. Before we were attacked at Pearl Harbor and afterward, Americans risk life and limb to stop the brutal assault on Chinese civilians, and the Chinese villagers loved and respected them for it. The rescue rate for pilots shot down over Japanese-held China was much higher than in Europe, because the Chinese didn't care about Japanese retribution (which was horrendous) because they knew the Americans were fighting and dying for them. It's an amazing story! In these days of economic warfare and a possible new Cold War, it's important to remember that we fought side-by-side with the Chinese Nationalists and Communists.
